Jonas van der Straeten has received a IE&IS Perseverance Voucher. This award recognizes the dedication, perseverance and energy he has invested in his personal grant application. The IE&IS Perseverance Voucher was created to support and appreciate researchers who are committed to obtaining personal grants despite challenges and low success rates.

What does it mean to you to receive the IE&IS Perseverance Voucher? Jonas: "Even if one is aware of the low acceptance rate, every rejection hurts 鈥� especially if it is close. This grant application was not only an investment by myself but also a huge one by the department, including countless feedback sessions, coachings, and mock panels. Getting such a voucher as a token of appreciation at the end of such a process  makes it much easier to look ahead and mobilize the energy for the next attempt."

Dean Geert-Jan van Houtum emphasizes the importance of this voucher: 鈥淲riting a grant proposal requires patience and perseverance. This award recognizes not only the hard work, but also the courage to pursue ambitious and groundbreaking research projects.鈥� Jonas has distinguished himself by his determination and perseverance in pursuing his research goals. His efforts and dedication are an inspiration to other researchers within the department.

How will you be spending the  鈧� 5.000 which comes with the Perseverance Vouche? Jonas: "I will use the money as a kind of seed funding for collaborations with local scholars in the geographies on which I do research (primarily South Asia) to co-develop a research agenda on 'silent sustainabilities'."
