He received this award for his contributions to multi-user information theory, source coding, and information-theoretic security.

The 2025 IEEE Richard W. Hamming Medal has been awarded to Frans Willems, Full Professor Emeritus in the Signal Processing Systems group of the department Electrical Engineering. He received this award for his contributions to multi-user information theory, source coding, and information-theoretic security.

Professor Willems has made fundamental contributions as a researcher and educator in the field of information theory. During his career he has contributed more than two hunderd journal and conference papers in the areas of multi-user information theory, noiseless source coding, data compression, data embedding, digital communication and biometrics. Next to that he holds several patents and he has done a lot of work for the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE).

The Hamming medal is awarded annually by the IEEE to individuals or teams for exceptional contributions to information sciences, systems, and technology. Subject areas include information theory, coding theory, data communication, computer networks, data storage and retrieval, and image and speech understanding. The Hamming Medal is named after the American scientist Richard Hamming who contributed a lot to computer engineering and telecommunications with his work.
