Douniel Lamghari-Idrissi, Rob Basten and Geert-Jan van Houtum win the IE&IS Valorization Prize 2021
The project ‘Improving capital goods performance through service contracts’ introduces a novel and advanced method to organize the after-sales service supply within the semiconductor industry, e.g. ASML.

1.5 billion euro value creation
This new service supply concept has been implemented over the complete installed base of ASML consisting of about 3,000 systems, spanning the complete chip industry worldwide. This enables ASML customers to do more with the same amount of resources. The new service supply concept results in a 1.5 billion euro value creation for the semiconductor industry.
The jury is impressed by the substantive analysis and mathematical underpinnings of the research. Several scientific publications have already been published. This makes the ideas behind this innovation accessible to colleagues who work in other areas of the industry.
Potential to impact other sectors as well
The results of the implementation of this research within ASML are impressive. This innovative research has already been implemented and has led to major savings, with which valorization is already a fact. The numbers mentioned above substantiate this, but this is really just the beginning. The research has the potential to have a lot of impact within other sectors as well. The jury strongly encourages further broadening the valorization to other areas of the industry.
Increase in sustainability of chip manufacturing
In this time where sustainability is an important issue, it is good to note that this research also has its impact in this area. The implementation has increased the sustainability of chip manufacturing. Less resources are needed to fulfil the world’s demand for chips (because of the increased output per factory). In addition, ASML’s new service supply chain concept is more sustainable by requiring less (emergency) air freight resulting in a lower carbon footprint.
