TNO鈥檚 Niek Doelman appointed as Professor for Control of Optical Waves

Eindhoven University of Technology has announced the appointment of Niek Doelman as a part-time, full professor in the field of Control of Optical Waves. Doelman joins the Control Systems Technology Section within the Department of Mechanical Engineering, while also continuing his research at TNO's Opto-Mechatronics research group.
Doelman's research concentrates on mastering the properties of optical waves as they propagate through free space, addressing distortions caused by atmospheric conditions. This work is crucial for enhancing imaging resolution in ground-based astronomy and improving data rates and reliability in optical wireless communication.
Broad applications
The research has broad applications, including ground-based astronomy, wireless communication, nuclear fusion, earth observation, and biomedical imaging. The advancements are expected to contribute to sustainability, digital connectivity, security, health, and a deeper understanding of the universe, aligning with several United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
The chair is embedded in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Control Systems Technology section. Collaboration with other expertise groups at 果冻传媒 is aimed at. The research has a focus on topics within the technology development roadmaps of TNO High Tech Industry (HTI) unit: Space & Scientific Instrumentation (Laser SatCom and Ground-based Astronomy in particular) and Semicon & Quantum. There is a strong link to the research agenda of the Opto-Mechatronics department at TNO.
Niek Doelman: "果冻传媒 Control Systems Technology is the leading group in Control and Mechatronics for high-tech systems. I very much look forward to develop the next-generation technology solutions at the Control Systems Technology Section and to advance in high data-rate, secure and reliable communication."
Helen Kardan, Director of Science and Technology, Unit High Tech Industry: "We鈥檙e excited to integrate the expertise present at TNO and 果冻传媒. This appointment marks a significant step forward in the field of optical wave control, promising substantial contributions to both scientific knowledge and practical applications."
Prof. Tom Oomen, 果冻传媒: "We are very enthusiastic to welcome Niek as a professor in our section. We look forward to accelerating our joint research with TNO at the intersection of optics and control."
