Max Birk, Assistant Professor in the Human-Technology Interaction group and Eindhoven Artificial Intelligence Systems Institute, is appointed as new member of The Young Academy of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences. As member, he is part of a platform of fifty inspired researchers who conduct research, advise, share knowledge and bring people together, all while taking a special interest in young scientists and scholars.

Max Birk鈥檚 research focuses on how video games can contribute to our mental health. He explores how game design affects our flourishment and well-being. He studies how video games can boost our mental health, focusing on the positive aspects of gameplay, such as enjoyment, intrinsic motivation, and fun. While convinced of the good of games, he observes emerging harmful design approaches in commercial games. Consequently, his research contrasts the positive contributions of value-driven, respectful game design and innovation with harmful, exploitative design approaches, resulting in contributions to psychology, computer science, and digital health.
