MedGPT: Ethical AI for Better Healthcare
果冻传媒 researchers Matthew Dennis and Mykola Pechenizkiy are launching the MedGPT project to develop ethical AI solutions for healthcare, with a focus on European legislation and societal impact

Matthew Dennis, Vlasta Sikimi膰, and Filippo Santoni de Sio (Philosophy and Ethics group), and Mykola Pechenizky and (Data and AI cluster) will join forces in a large European consortium focused on the use of AI models in healthcare. In each group a PhD student, will work on developing AI models for healthcare applications that are safe and ethical. The research is funded by ITEA4.
Ethical Challenges in Healthcare
Matthew Dennis talks about the importance of this research, 鈥淗ealthcare faces enormous challenges, including long waiting lists, rising costs due to an aging population, and increasing operational and staffing costs. LLMs have been proposed as a promising solution by generating apparently human answers to important questions, which may lead to more efficient and effective care. Nevertheless, many of these models do not currently comply with European legislation, such as the GDPR and the AI Act, which are designed to safeguard users. And there are other open ethical issues such as who is responsible for the actions of the AI and how this impacts on social justice. The MedGPT project aims to close this gap by integrating ethical AI and European regulations into the platform from the beginning.鈥
Understanding the workings of LLMs
Mykola Pechenizkiy: "To create safe and ethical AI applications, we need to better understand how AI models work. Our research on the basics of AI models will help us improve their privacy, robustness, and compliance, especially for healthcare applications."
Open platform
The Dutch researchers will concentrate on creating an open healthcare platform that leverages large language models (LLMs). These models will be designed with a strong emphasis on ethical considerations and GDPR compliance, ensuring that the platform upholds the highest standards of privacy and data protection. This platform will include pre-trained models tailored to specific healthcare applications, such as intensive care and diagnostic support. The goal is to set a standard for medical AI applications worldwide.
The consortium
The MedGPT project has a scope of 13.3 million euros and will last three years, from January 2025 to December 2027. The consortium consists of several partners from the Netherlands, Austria, Portugal and Turkey, including hospitals, universities and technology companies.
