Revolutionizing biomedical diagnostics with Terahertz technology

March 25, 2025

On March 14th, we kicked off the Terahertz Integrated Biosensing Project, a visionary initiative that will redefine biomedical diagnostics led by Shihab Al-Daffaie. With €2.865 million EU funding, this four-year project (2025-2028) is coordinated by Eindhoven University of Technology (¹û¶³´«Ã½) , bringing together 9 leading universities, 5 industry partners and some of Europe’s brightest minds.

Rector Magnificus ¹û¶³´«Ã½ Silvia Lenaerts

11 PhD researchers will be trained to develop breakthroughs in terahertz sensing, photonics, and biomedicine. The mission is to develop:

  • A modular system to interpret THz biosensors - translating biological signals in real time
  • An integrated photonic THz sensor for early disease detection
  • A revolutionary organ-on-chip model to test real-world medical applications

These innovations are more than technology — it’s about transforming and saving lives with early disease detection, personalized medicine and better patient outcomes. With medical industry leaders, we are ensuring that cutting-edge research translates into real-world healthcare solutions.

And collaboration is at the heart of this project. When we unite expertise, we accelerate progress. Together, we are not just developing technology — we are writing the next chapter of European excellence in science and human care.
