PhD researcher of the department of Industrial Design received her PhD from Eindhoven University of Technology on February 25 with her research entitled 鈥淪upporting reflexivity in design education - The design, evaluation and understanding of PhotoReflexivity. Her work offers an innovative approach to promote reflexivity in design education, a crucial skill for developing autonomous and responsible designers.

Social Relevance

In a world where designers are increasingly faced with complex societal challenges, the ability to critically examine one's own values and assumptions is essential. Consider entrepreneurs who must deal with ethical dilemmas, sustainability and inclusiveness. Ten Brink's research shows that structured reflexive practices are often lacking in current design education.

Research and Findings

Ten Brink's research focuses on the development of a mobile application that encourages students to share photographs, focusing on visibility, authorship and peer inspiration. She also introduces an Interpretation Framework (Me, The other, Culture, Temporality) to guide reflexive photo assignments. Three instruments 鈥 Photo profile, Photo story and Photo position - are designed and evaluated to help students articulate their interpretations.

Practical Applications

This research culminates in the practical PhotoReflexivity approach for fostering reflexivity in design education through self-made photos, equipping students with the awareness and critical skills needed for responsible and autonomous design practice. Additionally, PhotoReflexivity illustrates Design for Thinking, a design perspective that highlights the value of design in supporting essential human cognitive processes, such as reflexivity.
