HPM researchers Pascale Le Blanc, , Sonja Rispens and Maria Peeters guest-editors of a a special issue entitled “"Adapting to Emerging Technologies at Work: Effects on the Nature of Work and Employee Outcomes."
In their introductory editorial, Le Blanc and colleagues emphasize the profound and complex impact of emerging digital technologies (e.g., AI) in the workplace. While companies pursue these innovations for their competitive advantages, their editorial underscores the need to understand and integrate the human side of technology adoption into policy and implementation decisions. Such a holistic approach is crucial to comprehending the effects of technological changes on the job market and human collaboration with these systems.

Le Blanc and colleagues highlight that, although these innovations offer significant benefits, they may also lead to ambivalence among employees. Therefore, understanding employee perspectives and incorporating them into decision-making around technology implementation is essential.

The special issue also features a position paper written by Anna-Sofie Ulfert-Blank,  Pascale Le Blanc in collaboration with three other scholars. In this article, they (again) emphasize the importance of a holistic approach when studying the effects of technological changes. They advocate for more inter- and transdisciplinary empirical research on how emerging technologies influence the workplace and job quality, and consequently employee well-being and performance With the ultimate goal of developing theories and evidence-based best practices regarding a human-centred design, implementation, and use of emerging technologies at work.
