Societal Relevance

In an era where the sharing economy is thriving, Airbnb offers a unique opportunity for travelers to experience local culture and hospitality. However, with the rise of smart technologies and Internet of Things (IoT) devices, the focus often shifts to functional diversity rather than enhancing the authenticity of these experiences. An's research shows how technology can go beyond mere functionality and serve as a mediator to provide authentic experiences.

Challenges for Entrepreneurs

Entrepreneurs in the tourism sector, such as Airbnb hosts, face the challenge of offering their guests a unique and authentic experience. This research identifies various aspects of hosting that can be improved through technology. For example, by using interactive solutions like Digital Concierges (DCs), hosts can give their guests a sense of welcome and encourage them to explore the local culture.

Research Findings

An's research followed three phases: Design Space Exploration, Generative Design, and User Experience Study. In the first phase, the customer journey of Airbnb guests was mapped, leading to the identification of five potential scenarios and four design spaces to enhance the user experience. In the second phase, 73 design ideas were developed in collaboration with seven Airbnb hosts, embodying the desired authenticity. In the final phase, these designs were tested in a real Airbnb environment, providing insights into how these artifacts influence guests' perception of authenticity.

The findings of the research show that the designed artifacts gave guests a sense of welcome, encouraged discovery through serendipitous cues, and fostered richer connections with the host and local culture. This research offers valuable insights for tourism professionals and experience designers to better understand how guests perceive authenticity.
