IST graduate Jos Wigchert recognized for thesis excellence in Kooy Award 2025

Jos Wigchert, a recent IST master's graduate, received second place and an honorable mention in the 2025 Kooy Award for his outstanding master鈥檚 thesis on detecting spoofing attacks on LEO satellite systems using deep learning. Supervised by Dr. Savio Sciancalepore, his research was recognized for its originality and practical relevance to national security. The Kooy Award, presented by KIVI鈥檚 Department of Defense and Security, honors top graduation research in defense-related technology.

Jos Wigchert, a recent graduate from Eindhoven University of Technology (IST track), has received an honorable mention in the national Kooy Award 2025. He was awarded second place along for his exceptional master's thesis.

Wigchert completed his studies in July 2024 in the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science. He followed the Master's program in Computer Science and Engineering, specializing in the track Information Security Technology. 

Under the supervision of D, Assistant Professor in the Security (SEC) group, Jos worked on the detection of spoofing attacks targeting satellite systems. His thesis, titled  explores how artificial intelligence can help protect satellite communication, a topic of growing importance in both civilian and defense sectors.
 

The is presented annually by the Royal Netherlands Society of Engineers , Department of Defense and Security. It honors the best graduation research in the Netherlands in the field of technology relevant to national security. This year, the jury decided to grant not only a main prize but also an honorable mention to Jos Wigchert, recognizing the originality and practical value of his work.
 

The award ceremony took place during the Kooy Symposium 2025. The award is supported by the Kooy Fund, named after Professor Johan Kooy, a renowned Dutch space scientist. The fund aims to support research and innovation that contributes to defense and safety in the Netherlands.
