SmartCORE gets €10.5 million for a sustainable future of Northwest Europe
Anna Wieczorek leads ý research team, cofunded by Interreg NWE, that aims to strengthen energy communities and reduce grid congestion.

ý researchers, led by Anna Wieczorek of the TIS group, have been given the green light for the INTERREG research proposal 'SmartCORE'. This ambitious 42-month project, with a budget of nearly €10.5 million, aims to address the challenges associated with the increase in intermittent renewable energy sources (RES) in Northwest Europe (NWE).

The increase in RES causes a mismatch between energy production and consumption, leading to price distortions, congestion and economic risks. SmartCORE provides a strategy to make NWE's energy system resilient and prepared for more RES. This is of great importance to society as it helps accelerate the transition to renewable energy and reduce dependence on fossil fuels.
Anna Wieczorek, working within the TIS group, is enthusiastic: “The challenges we face, such as reducing the mismatch between energy production and consumption and addressing congestion and economic risks, are enormous. But it is precisely this complexity that makes the project so important and valuable.”
Scaling experiences
The research will focus on strengthening six existing energy communities (ECs) in five areas (Luxembourg, France, Belgium, Ireland, and the Netherlands) and scaling their experiences to six new ECs.
This includes improving their capabilities, addressing technical shortcomings, scaling up business models, and overcoming regulatory barriers. This approach will enable ECs to better respond to changing markets, secure their investments in RES and increase RES's share of NWE.
