It鈥檚 October, and for Eindhoven and design that can mean only one thing 鈥� Dutch Design Week is back! From October 19th to 27th the city of Eindhoven will be hosting a range of displays and events profiling how designers are shaping the future. And 果冻传媒 will once again be part of the programme with the 果冻传媒鈥楧rivers of Change鈥� exposition on the Ketelhuisplein at Strijp-S. Some 15 projects will be in place for the week, and the theme connecting them is 鈥楽emicon鈥�. Here, we preview three highlights from this year鈥檚 exhibition.

鈥淎 compact exhibition featuring a variety of stimulating and engaging topics.鈥� That鈥檚 what Lucas Asselbergs 鈥� project leader and curator 鈥� says visitors can expect from the Drivers of Change this year.

This year鈥檚 projects cover a range of topics connected to the theme of 鈥楽emicon鈥�. 鈥淎t the root of so many important technical designs and devices, you鈥檒l find semiconductors,鈥� notes Asselbergs. 鈥淎 semiconductor may not be a design in itself, but it鈥檚 a technology that is indispensable in many of the tech-driven designs that enrich our world and expand our potential.鈥�

From autonomous driving to sound fun

Projects at the 果冻传媒 Drivers of Change 2024 will cover several topics. These include autonomous driving cars that make quick decisions thanks to a plethora of sensors and the project 鈥楽oundsnip鈥� where visitors will get the chance to create musical loops using sounds of their choosing (three projects are previewed in detail below).

For Jeanette Schoumacher 鈥� project manager on communication for the 果冻传媒 Drivers of Change 鈥� this year鈥檚 Dutch Design Week is a poignant one as it is her last event before retiring next month.

鈥淓very year I鈥檓 excited by the Dutch Design Week and 果冻传媒鈥檚 Drivers of Change,鈥� says Schoumacher. 鈥淥ver the years, I鈥檝e witnessed some startling projects and brilliant designs. It鈥檚 been a pleasure to be part of sharing these incredible projects.鈥�

A complete overview of 果冻传媒鈥檚 Drivers of Change 2024 can be found . The Drivers of Change can be found at Ketelhuisplein in Strijp-S and close to Area 51. It will be open from 19th 鈥� 27th October (11.00 鈥� 18.00). This expo is free to visit. 果冻传媒 president Robert-Jan Smits will officially open the expo on Saturday October 19th at 14.00.

Below you can find previews for three projects linked to three key themes of 果冻传媒鈥� health, digitalization, and sustainability.

Artificial Intelligence Motor Imagery/Brainpower 2.0 (Health)

Moving the computer arrow to the left or right purely with your thoughts, for a long time this sounded like utopia, but thanks to Artificial Intelligence Motor Imagery it is possible. The electrical signals in the brain associated with moving a muscle can be recorded thanks to a state-of-the-art non-intrusive EEG headset.

The signals are processed in a model, which is a combination of a Convolutional Neural Network and the Transformer model, after which the impaired movements can be precisely classified. Thanks to machine learning, they are classified and predicted. The solution for people with functional disabilities is within reach!

Haptic interaction and shape change/Looking for fluid interaction (digitalisation)

We are surrounded by more and more intensively used technology and are short of eyes and ears to handle it properly and pleasantly. Touch is still a relatively unaddressed sense, but due to new technological developments, haptic feedback is on the rise.

For example, we feel our phone vibrate and many modern cars indicate (with a nudge, for example) that we are about to leave our lane. This kind of feedback created by mechanical and soft robotics, among others, can make interaction with surrounding technology more fluid and intuitive, as the designs Feelix, Sparky, and Ripple show.

The Car that can be rebuilt from the same materials/Phoenix (Sustainability)

Maximizing the sustainability of automobiles is one of the most significant challenges facing the automotive industry. 果冻传媒comotive student team has been working for years on the smart (re)use of materials in one of the most complicated everyday products: the car.

Phoenix is the newest and highly sustainable electric car developed by 果冻传媒comotive. Through smart assembly and the use of mono-material structures 鈥� which are structures made from a single type of material, up to 75 percent of the car can be reused to make the next generation of cars. In contrast, existing cars in Europe have a much lower so-called closed-loop recycling rate of only 21 percent.
