Eindhoven Institute for Renewable Energy Systems

About EIRES

The Eindhoven Institute for Renewable Energy Systems (EIRES) stimulates and develops interdisciplinary research in the field of energy conversion and storage in close connection with industry. EIRES acts as a platform and a one-stop-shop for energy related research at ¹û¶³´«Ã½, and takes up a steering role in developing and expressing thought leadership in the (inter)national debate on the energy transition.

Accelerating the energy transition

EIRES brings together ¹û¶³´«Ã½ researchers from different departments working on materials, processes and systems for energy storage and conversion. It is the institute’s mission to enable a CO2-neutral energy system by developing solutions that deliver the energy transition to people’s homes in a manufacturable, scalable, and affordable way.

Vision of EIRES

There is a general consensus that our future energy system will be not linear and based on one-directional flows of energy from centralized energy producers to consumers, as it has been for long. We will most likely end up with an interconnected, decentralized and omnidirectional system that supports the continuous flow of energy between so-called prosumers – users that both produce and consume energy. Intermediate temporary storage facilities will be implemented to mitigate any imbalances between supply and demand.

The fastest way of making the disruptive transformation to such a circular system is by developing small scale modular systems that empower citizens to play their part in accelerating the energy transition, and that enable steep learning curves, fast market penetration and an overall cost reduction. That is why at EIRES, we focus on developing innovations like tabletop electrolyzers that can be deployed in a modular manner, spread like wildfire and transform the energy system from the bottom up.

Since we aim to develop technologies that will swiftly and successfully penetrate the market, we take a systems approach instead of developing theoretical solutions in splendid isolation. In our institute, multidisciplinary teams of researchers work together to both optimize scenarios of the future energy system and to solve specific pieces of this larger puzzle, in close connection with industry.
