The System Transitions & Scenarios focus area delves into the multifaceted energy transition pathway, encompassing a spectrum of technical, economic, and social dimensions. As such it meticulously models and scrutinizes the intricate interplay among emerging technologies, regulatory frameworks, the energy consumption patterns (behaviors) of both businesses and individuals, all of which exert profound effects on the forthcoming performance of our systems. In addition to formulating visionary blueprints for future energy landscapes, this focus area explicitly takes into account the diverse transition pathways leading to renewable energy systems, as well as the dynamic performance evaluations of transitioning energy systems.
About the focus area
This focus area responds to the challenges that arise during and as a result of the energy transition- a complex amalgamation of technical, economic, and social dynamics. These challenges encompass a wide spectrum, ranging from decentralization, electrification, and systems integration to the emergence of novel market dynamics and prosumer engagement. Moreover, they encompass the pervasive influence of digitization and confront issues related to governance, spatial integration of the energy transition, public acceptance, and energy justice. In this context, we also consider the critical aspect of heating transition, adopting a multi-carrier systems approach. Our distinctive approach prioritizes holistic system analysis and optimization over isolated components, drawing upon an array of methodologies, spanning from energy systems modeling to visionary thinking and participatory engagement.
