BIRTHSCREEN: Effective and safer maternity care through better monitoring by means of electrophysiological cardiotocography
A small number of pregnancies involve serious complications. Monitoring of fetal heart rate and contraction activity (cardiotocogram, CTG) can contribute to early (risk) detection. However, the current CTG method has limitations, which is why Máxima MC is focusing on electrophysiological CTG (eCTG) in this project. eCTG is more accurate and, unlike regular CTG, can be used continuously (24/7). This allows complications to be detected earlier and interventions to be used more effectively, with expected health benefits for mother and child and associated cost reductions.
The main objective of this TZO project is to investigate the implementation of electrophysiological monitoring within tertiary maternity care. Electrophysiological monitoring, unlike CTG, is possible continuously (24/7), which allows complications to be detected earlier and interventions to be used more effectively to promote the health of mother and fetus. In addition, the electrophysiological CTG (eCTG) is safe and can be applied by the patient themselves, which means that it can also be used at home and patients do not have to come to the hospital for this. This contributes to our ambition to make maternity care more family-oriented, whereby patients can more often stay at home in the comfort of their family and familiar surroundings.
