Energiecrisis: Moet Nederland ook een energienoodtoestand uitroepen? - WNL Op Zondag 26 Jan 2025
The new president of the United States has announced plans to tackle high energy prices by drilling more oil and gas. The Netherlands also has higher energy bills than its neighbours, largely due to its dependence on foreign gas since the Groningen gas tap was permanently turned off. David Smeulders, professor of Energy Technology at Eindhoven University of Technology, argues that the US wants to drill for more and cheaper oil and gas for consumers and manufacturing, but that industry will not drill when prices are low. He notes that the US is the world's largest producer and exporter of oil and gas, but also the largest consumer. Smeulders argues that the Netherlands still produces a quarter of its own gas, but is also dependent on imports from the US. He suggests that turning off the Groningen gas tap was a political decision, not based on facts, and that it might be better to keep the wells open for future use. with David Smeulders at 23:45 (in Dutch).
