RESEARCH PROFILE
Dr Frauke Behrendt is Associate Professor in Transitions to Sustainable Mobility at the Technology, Innovation and Society Group at the Eindhoven University of Technology. Her expertise is on smart and sustainable mobility as well as digital/data culture and society.
Behrendt’s research is located at the intersection of three key themes: Mobility, Sustainability and Digitalization. It engages at the local, national and international scale, investigates a range of modes, explores the past, present and future – and considers the user experience, the design and industry perspective, and the policy landscape – of how we can move towards radically more sustainable mobilities.
ACADEMIC BACKGROUND
Frauke Behrendt is part of the ‘Transit-Oriented Development for inclusive and sustainable rural-urban regions’ Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) - Innovative Training Network (ITN). She is also part of the management team that leads the 12-PhD ‘’ program (funded by and EAISI).
She attracted €3.5m of external research funding and let (Principal Investigator) a range of projects and interdisciplinary research teams (also with non-academic partners), including , Intelligent Transport Solutions for Social Inclusion (ITSSI), and . She also let the successful funding application for , working with Universities of Oxford and Leeds as well as the WHO. Furthermore, she was Co-Investigator on the European and let the Mobile Music Workshop Series.
Behrendt’s interdisciplinary research is published in ranked peer-reviewed journals and is in the areas of transport and mobility studies, communication and media studies, sound studies, computer science and interaction design. Her research results have impact beyond the academy for business (e.g. citations in patents, start-up consultancy) and policy (e.g. reports). She has given numerous keynotes and guest lectures in the UK, Europe and the US. She peer reviews and evaluates for EU H2020 calls and projects and several national funding bodies (UK, Hong Kong, etc).
Frauke Behrendt’s teaching experience comprises undergraduate, graduate and PhD level, including successful supervision of several PhD and MA thesis, as well as degree development and leadership.
She works with PostDoc Eriketti Servou’ project on ‘The role of AI in sustainable mobility through MaaS’ (funded by and EAISI). Previous PostDocs now work at Wageningen University and the .
Frauke Behrendt currently supervises PhDs on (‘’-funded), on (ICF and ), (), and on ().
She is also supervising PhDs on the , on , , and , for all of which she won the funding and was first supervisor while at Brighton. PhD completions include and .
Before joining ¹û¶³´«Ã½, Frauke Behrendt was the Deputy Head of School for Research & Enterprise and the founding director of the at the . She also researched at the Cultures of the Digital Economy research institute (CoDE) at and was Visiting Assistant Professor at the Digital+Media Graduate Program at the Rhode Island School of Design (US). Behrendt obtained her PhD at the (UK), where she was also part of the / // ‘ network led by and his ‘’ collaboration with and . Her MA is from (Germany).
