University of the Future at DDW2024!
At Dutch Design Week 2024, we invited the public to step into the University of the Future and experience firsthand how education can contribute to solving the grand societal challenges the world faces. Through interactive elements, visitors discovered how their unique contributions, when combined with others, could create a powerful, collective impact. At the University of the Future, everyone鈥攏o matter their age or background鈥攈as a role to play in creating impactful change and is welcome to join.
On May 24th we organized a follow-up on the focus sessions, for which we invited participants that were also present during the earlier focus sessions that happened in February and March of this year. It was good to notice that the participants recognized that their input from the focus sessions was represented in the updated scenario, which served as a base for the discussions of this follow-up event.
We started with a discussion around the provocative statement 鈥楾his university is only for motivated students鈥 to get everyone's attention. Afterwards, we had discussions in subgroups on 鈥楳ission driven research鈥, 鈥楲earner initiated validation of the lifelong learning portfolio鈥, and 鈥楥o-learning and co-creation at the core of collaboration to tackle the global socio-technical challenges鈥. During the closing drinks, the discussion continued in a constructive manner. It was great to see so much enthusiasm and collect valuable input once again!

Focus sessions on relevant directions
We are working hard to improve our scenario on the 果冻传媒 of 2050. We like to call what we are doing in this phase: 鈥楢dding pixels to the vague picture鈥. For this purpose, we organized focus sessions around the topics of 鈥楲earning Environment鈥, 鈥楲earning Experience鈥, 鈥榁alidation of Learning鈥, 鈥楥o-learning in the Collaboration Hub鈥, 鈥楻esearch and Learning Integration鈥, and 鈥極rganizational Structure鈥.
For each of these focus sessions we had interactive hands-on discussions on specific questions with experts in the field. These were intense, but very informative, weeks. We are looking forward to analyzing all the input we gathered and implementing it into the next version of our scenario of the 果冻传媒 of 2050!

Redirect from questionnaire to exhibition
We have exiting news! We are aiming to exhibit about our University of the Future moonshot project at the Dutch Design Week 2024 in Eindhoven, The Netherlands!
We are constantly looking for ways to include society and our broad community in our activities, since that continues to bring us interesting insights for our further steps. The past period we considered to bring out a questionnaire in which the input of all types of stakeholders could be collected, but we experienced that there are way more attractive ways to collect this input. And since this is a moonshot project we decided to 鈥榞o big or go home鈥 by aiming for an exciting exhibition! Are you interested in following our 鈥榬oad to the exhibition鈥? Visit the 鈥楻oad to the exhibition鈥 blog page on this website, in which we will start to share small updates on the developments around this exhibition soon.
An approach to support competence identification for Self-Directed Learning in extracurricular student project
This research project (Master Graduation Project) from Bart Koppelmans aimed to design an approach to support competence identification in self-directed learning environments, specifically within the context of extracurricular student innovation projects. The project employed a mixed-methods approach, including a comprehensive literature review and co-creation sessions with students, staff, and educational experts.
The findings resulted in a framework for supporting self-directed learning and competence identification, which was then applied to the current state of the Student Teams Program at 果冻传媒 innovation Space. The implementation of this framework has the potential to significantly enhance the learning experience for students, empowering them to take control of their own learning journey and better identify their learning gains.

Session 果冻传媒 Young Academy of Engineering (EYAE)
EYAE is a network of enthusiastic, ambitious and outstanding early career scientists, designers and engineers with a broad interest and view on science and engineering in general. During the yearly EYAE retreat, Kathinka Rijk and Chantal Brans joined them for a session on the design of the university of the future. We specifically invited them to think about the education of the future, taking their role as excellent researchers and potential future leaders into account. They came up with three different designs of the university that were complementary. Some highlights from this session:
We value and make use of foundational knowledge could be added as an extra design principle
Each student creates their profile, there are no fixed programs. The diploma 鈥渕inimum鈥 is set, but freedom to go beyond this.
You could look at the students in the team as a tree, where the roots and stem are the research basis, and the branches are the courses. The different sizes of the trees demonstrate students in different stages of their program/development. Boat is diverse team with one 鈥渃aptain鈥 leading the way.
In the picture you can see a lego structure that symbolizes the university as open and approachable, on a green foundation. For realizing this, working in teams and organizing this structure is important.

Co-creation sessions on extracurricular learning staff members
We have conducted a co-creation session with staff members at 果冻传媒, including members of the Honors Academy, Extracurricular cluster (果冻传媒 innovation Space), working group personal & professional development (P&PD), and employability chain. The goal of the session was to show the outcomes of the co-creation sessions with student teams, and first ideas/directions for possible educational interventions to help make extracurricular learning more explicit/visible. Next to this, we explored and ideated solutions for their more specific questions, following an institutional perspective: 1) How might we support students in identifying the competences they want to develop? 2) How might we strike a balance between providing students with structured support for learning while empowering them to pursue their individual learning paths? 3) How might we validate EC student learning, while considering the open nature of the learning experience? Next to the ideas gathered with student teams, the outcomes of this session will serve as building block towards the design of educational interventions we aim to pilot as early as September 2023.
We initiated an international working group!
We believe that it is vital to step outside our own bubble during this project. This is why we try to involve all types of stakeholders during every step of the way. An important part of this is getting inspired by, and discussing and brainstorming with, international peers. This is why we took the initiative to set up an international working group. The initial participants of this working group are very diverse with university colleagues from Singapore, India, South-Africa, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, France, Northern-Ireland and the Netherlands. We already had an online meeting to get to know each other, but we will visit the CDIO conference in Trondheim for the official kick-off of this working group with a full-day workshop and hope to continue the collaboration permanently. Are you also interested in joining this working group? Do not hesitate to contact us!
Co-creation sessions on extracurricular learning student teams
Over a period of three months, we had a series of inspiring sessions with student teams and their members about extracurricular learning. In this sessions, we had the opportunity to discuss the personal interests and aspirations, and how students see/envision that individual learning can be organized within their teams. The sessions followed a three steps were guided by our team members, and canvases designed to support these discussions. The last step addressed the question of how to make extracurricular student learning more visible/explicit, aiming to ideate solutions 鈥揵y students鈭 for students. The outcomes of these sessions helped us identity important elements/considerations when ideating educational interventions for this learning environment.
