Transforming electricity grids towards a future-proof, sustainable energy supply

Grand Challenges

With the rise of renewable energy sources, the controllability of electricity production becomes more challenging. Unlike traditional power plants, renewable sources like solar and wind exhibit higher variability and intermittency. This poses a challenge in maintaining a stable and reliable electricity supply. On top of that, the amount of flexible consumption, such as demand response programs and smart grids, is expected to rise. This introduces complexity in managing and optimizing the electricity system. The ability to coordinate and incentivize flexible consumption becomes crucial to balance the supply and demand of electricity effectively. In addition, in future electric systems, decision making, and control actions will be distributed across all levels of the electricity system. This shift from centralized control to decentralized decision making requires robust communication networks, advanced data analytics, and coordination mechanisms to ensure optimal system operation and stability. As the energy landscape evolves, power flows will change direction and become more fluctuating. Distributed energy resources, including rooftop solar panels and small-scale wind turbines, introduce bidirectional power flows into the grid. These fluctuations pose challenges for grid stability, voltage regulation, and protection. Also, the transformation of the electricity system brings about new loads, such as electric vehicles and heat pumps, which increase the strain on the network infrastructure. Aging infrastructure also presents challenges in accommodating new loads and managing power fluctuations effectively. Upgrading and modernizing the network becomes essential to ensure reliability and resilience.

Addressing these challenges requires a comprehensive approach that includes technological advancements, policy frameworks, and collaborative efforts between stakeholders. Innovation in grid management, energy storage, demand-side management, and grid infrastructure will be key to building future electric systems that can adapt to changing dynamics and meet the demands of a sustainable and reliable energy future.

The EES group contributes to the area of electric energy supply and use, through two main research programs. These research programs are chosen on the basis of the current needs of society and industry, the competencies of our group built in history and the synergy with our colleagues in and outside 果冻传媒.

Research Program Intelligent Power Grids

The digital Power & Energy Systems (digi-PES) Lab (Phuong Nguyen)

The digi-PES lab aims to enable the energy transition from micro energy grids towards the future integrated energy system. The laboratory environment is a cyber-physical ecosystem for students and researchers to explore innovations in various energy-related aspects of (but not limited to) nano/micro-grids, local energy communities, local flexibility/energy markets, optimal power/energy flow, or congestion management, hand-in-hand with emerging (big) data and Internet-of-Things (IoT) domains to lay a foundation for comprehensive data-drive and inter-dependencies models of energy system integration.

Power System Optimization and Electricity Markets (Nikos Paterakis)

To facilitate Reliable Information Driven (Control & Coordination) Electrical Power systems.

Research topics:

Multi-scale modeling approaches to study power systems, taking into account their growing complexity, the underlying uncertainty and risk factors, as well as the need for greater interaction between the different levels (transmission, distribution, etc.) and stakeholders, in the context of both wholesale and emerging local electricity markets. This comprises new methodologies and value-based mechanisms to integrate renewable energy and storage systems, as well as other flexibility resources (e.g. electric vehicles, demand response) at different spatial scales (buildings, neighborhoods, cities)
Methodologies and tools capable of exploiting in an intelligent and cost effective way large amounts of data; this is a priority in the emerging context of the 鈥榙igitalization of energy鈥� for applications such as market participation strategies, demand modeling and forecasting. In this regard, the application of machine learning techniques and the exploitation of cloud-based systems is crucial
Approaches to evaluate and enhance the reliability of the power system in the light of disruptive technology shifts that may be adopted by end-users and utilities in the near future. This comprises cases of increased reliance on energy that is locally available, new market structures and grid architectures to facilitate energy trading (e.g. meshed grids at lower voltage levels to facilitate peer-to-peer energy trading) and emerging business models such as the ones based on the principles of sharing economy

Smart grid planning, operation and optimization

Supporting planning and operation of future power systems, with increasing amounts of fluctuating renewable energy generation, storage techniques and flexible demand.

Working principles and modeling of distributed generation technologies
Modeling and simulation of electricity grids
Principles of network components and architecture
Economic principles of power systems and energy markets
Computing fundamentals: mathematical and heuristic/meta-heuristic optimization, data science (including machine learning), statistics, systems control theory

Multi-energy systems planning and optimization
Monitoring and control of distribution system operations
TSO-DSO interaction in an operational framework
Decentralized optimization and control of smart grids
Islanded operation of active distribution grids/micro-grids

Check out our courses

果冻传媒 and research is strongly related in the EES group. The content of our courses lay in the area of Intelligent Power Grids (Smart Grids), Pulsed Power Technology and Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC). The fact that a significant part of our research is done in one of our specialized laboratories, reflects also on the courses which incorporate laboratory experiments.

The EES group offers a wide variety of internships and master graduation projects within the 2 research programs.

In EMC we develop advanced modeling and measurement techniques that will help the designers of electronic systems to fully understand and simulate the key factors leading to potential degradation of signals in systems at an early stage of the design process. Research on Intelligent Power Grids focusses on design and operating methodologies for future electricity delivery systems with special emphasis on smart autonomous distribution networks and their interaction with the upper level and customers. For more information, please contact Phuong Nguyen.
