Business Engineering

Digital solutions, powered by advanced technologies like mobile apps and IoT, have seamlessly integrated into every aspect of our lives, driving business innovation while fostering sustainable development. These solutions, including platforms, rely on collaborations between multiple stakeholders for value co-creation, and they are designed not only for economic viability but also with a focus on environmental and social sustainability.

The Business Engineering (BE) research cluster explores and develops novel concepts, methods, and techniques for the development of innovative digital solutions within service ecosystems. This involves engineering business models and operating models (encompassing processes and IT) for these solutions and ensuring alignment between them. Additionally, the BE cluster supports organizations in improving their capabilities and processes for developing and managing these solutions.

More specifically, the BE focuses on two broad lines of research:

Engineering of Digital Solutions:

  • Collaborative business model design for sustainable digital solutions
  • Evaluation and performance management (including impact assessment and KPIs) of business models for digital solutions
  • Operating model design (including processes and IT requirements) for digital solutions
  • Responsible digital solution design (considering their human, social, and ethical concerns)

Process and Capability Improvement:

  • Business process innovation and (re-)design for incorporating sustainability in the design and analysis of business processes through digital technologies
  • Maturity model-based capability improvement (e.g., for advanced data analytics capabilities of organizations, digital and sustainability transformation capabilities)
