Dr. Daniel Kapitan

Dr. Daniel Kapitan has always been passionate about teaching. From tutoring mathematics and physics during his high school years to teaching bachelor’s and master’s students during his PhD, Daniel has continuously been engaged in education. Throughout his professional career, he has frequently taken on the responsibility of providing in-company training, and he enjoys applying his consulting skills to professional education. 

In the field of data science and AI, Daniel has observed a great deal of FUD (Fear, Uncertainty, and Doubt) due to commercial interests. Through his work at EAISI Academy, he is committed to democratizing data science and AI. Just like Remy in Ratatouille says, "anyone can cook," Daniel believes that anyone can learn and apply the fundamental principles of machine learning. He finds great satisfaction in seeing his former students complete their first projects and receive recognition at national conferences.

Expertise

Dr. Daniel Kapitan is one of the few specialists in the Netherlands who combines corporate experience, academic research, and executive education. His background in strategy consulting, strong foundation in mathematics from his PhD, and hands-on experience in data science projects allow him to bridge the gap between conceptual knowledge and practical application. 

Over the past 25 years, Daniel has worked with data in many forms and across diverse industries, allowing him to draw parallels and provide real-world examples from his vast experience. He continues to stay actively engaged in coding and programming because he enjoys it and believes in staying up to date with technological advancements. 

Daniel’s areas of expertise include data-centric AI, knowledge science, data architecture, and federated learning. Through these various roles, he aims to apply "AI for good," fostering data solidarity and secure data sharing to address societal challenges. 

 

Biography

Dr. Daniel Kapitan studied Physics at Leiden University, where he earned his MSc in 1994. He went on to complete his PhD in Physics at the University of Oxford in 1999, working on industrial applications of micromachining using high-power lasers in collaboration with Philips, Robert Bosch, and TNO. After a brief post-doc at Macquarie University in Sydney, Daniel left academia to work in the telecom industry for over a decade. He began as a strategy consultant with Arthur D. Little and Roland Berger before taking on various roles at T-Mobile Netherlands. 

In 2011, Daniel transitioned to the healthcare sector and co-founded GIDS.com, a start-up that provided analytics-as-a-service for hospitals. He later developed a digital platform for a chain of specialty clinics, which was eventually acquired by Bergman Clinics. In 2018, Daniel returned to consultancy, focusing on government and healthcare organizations. Today, he combines his roles as an advisor, lecturer, and applied researcher, with the goal of making AI more trustworthy, transparent, and democratic.
